Making the bike lane on the boulevard between Wesselényi and Rákóczi streets safer

Elizabeth Boulevard 2.
Category: Traffic engineering
Status: Waiting for solution
This problem has unfortunately been bothering me for quite some time, as I cycle there on a daily basis. The bike lane on the boulevard is life-threatening when approaching Rákóczi út from Wesselényi utca. (The other side is also dangerous, but I know that it belongs to the eighth district). Going straight, I constantly get my bike under turning cars. Which I somewhat understand, because neither a sign nor a flashing traffic light warns motorists that they can expect cyclists there. Couldn't something be done to protect us a little? I've been cycling in Budapest for 19 years, but I've never been so afraid of cycling as I was in that part. 2023/06/09 reply from Budapest Public Transport “In their notification sent to our Company – which we also received from BKK, since our Company performs operational management traffic engineering tasks throughout Budapest – they drew our attention to the dangers of the bicycle crossing on the Blaha Lujza Square in the VII-VIII. district, on the Nagykörút line. The design of the bicycle crossings and bicycle lanes on the Nagykörút line on Blaha Lujza Square is completely identical to the solution used at any intersection where there is a bicycle lane. The traffic lanes run next to the bicycle lane on the edge of the roadway. In such a case, if vehicles turning right arrive, they must pull onto the bicycle lane and turn right, weaving between the cyclists. The Road Traffic Act also prescribes this behavior. So the design complies with both the current regulations and the Road Traffic Act. The location differs in its feel from other locations with the same design because the the number of vehicles turning right is significant. However, this stems from the fact that this is a main network junction. Unfortunately, there is no way to separate cyclists and those turning right here in time, since it is possible to drive straight from the outer traffic lane, not just to the right, so it cannot drive at a different time than the traffic in the inner lane. On the other hand, during the 1-minute period operating due to the trams, such short free signals would be created that would not be able to satisfy both road and bicycle traffic.”
